Their blanks are made from high-quality 416 stainless steel, a material chosen specifically to boost both durability and performance in demanding shooting applications.
To ensure optimal results for WIN Tactical, all Bartlein barrels are specified with 5R rifling. Bartlein considers 5R rifling a key feature in their product lineup, and more information about why this rifling type is important can be found in the following sections.
5R Rifling & Barrel Finishing - Why 5R Rifling Matters
5R rifling is designed to be easier on bullets and more consistent in performance. Compared to traditional rifling—where the lands meet the grooves at a sharp 90° corner—5R uses a gentler land profile that reduces jacket stress as the bullet engages the bore. The design also uses an odd number of lands (five), so the lands don’t directly oppose each other. Together, these features reduce bullet deformation during engraving, which helps minimize jacket damage and supports reliable performance.
We’ve also found that 5R rifling can improve bullet flight characteristics, based on feedback shared by an ammunition/bullet manufacturer in late 2019.
Lapping Process (no extra polishing needed)
Our barrels are pre-lapped before rifling and then finish-lapped after rifling to achieve a smooth, uniform bore. Because of this, fire-lapping or additional bore polishing is unnecessary and not recommended. A properly lapped barrel does not inherently wear out faster—in our experience, our barrels commonly outlast many button-rifled barrels.
Precision and Uniformity
Bore finish and dimensional consistency are core to our process. Our rifling equipment is precise enough to hold twist rates to the fourth decimal place (example: 11.3642). Single-point cut rifling is one of the lowest-stress rifling methods available, producing an exact, repeatable twist with highly consistent bore and groove dimensions—without the process-driven variation that can occur with other rifling methods.
